The Kaziranga National Park is a World Heritage Site and a famous game sanctuary that singly houses the giant one horned Rhinoceros. Located in Assam, on the banks of the Diphlu River this national park covers an area of 688 sq. kilometers of damp and swampy bushes of tall Elephant grass, thickets and lush green vegetation that presents a soothing and tranquil ambience. Presence of the majestic animal tiger is overshadowed by other wild life species like elephants, wild buffaloes and this precious endangered species of Rhino. This National Park also boasts of housing other animals like swamp deer, hog deer, wild boar, Hoolock Gibbon, Rock Python, Monitor Lizard, crested serpent eagle, fishing eagle, grey headed fishing eagle etc.
Extreme preventive measures have been taken to preserve this endangered one horned Rhino from hunting and poaching and presently with an appreciable number of 1500 Rhinos this sanctuary is the pride of India. Located on the National Highway No.37, the road bifurcates this park among the beautifully laid out tea garden valleys that add to the beauty of this park.
Due to its well connectivity between three important cities Guwahati, Dibrugarh and Jorhat in Assam, it has become a paradise for the nature lovers.
The entry point to this park is Mihimukhi and from here elephants can be hired to set off for an exploration of this game sanctuary. Trailing through the swamps, long savannah grasses and well guided by experienced mahouts, the elephant proceeds with the visitors who have set their anxious gaze for the much awaited Rhino.
The cameras go on with their non stop work as there is no dearth of photogenic settings that can be left out. The same trail can be carried in jeeps also, but the elephant safari is the most preferred option.
Absolute silence must be maintained during the trail excepting the chirping of the birds that is quite unheard of. The bird watchers also have a good time on the elephant back sighting some rare species through the binoculars unless the elephant stops in front of the most sought after game, the one horned Rhino among the thickets along with its calf. The Rhino gives ample time for the visitors to click their cameras before it slowly disappears into the bush towards its own destination. The elephant turns back and the mahout guides through important routes to get the maximum visibility of other animals enough to entertain the visitors.
Kaziranga is visited almost throughout the year excepting during the monsoon when the swamps and the marshes get overflowed making the routes inaccessible to carry out the trails.
