Gangotri is the second largest glacier in Asia after the Siachen glacier which is located 3,048 meters above sea level in the state of Uttaranchal. Gangotri to Gaumukh Trekking
Gaumukh is located 11 kilometers uphill the Gangotri and is the main physical source of the Holy Ganges. Thousands of pilgrims trek to this place to offer prayers and the verdant valleys, snow clad mountain ranges with clouds clinging over present such an aesthetic beauty that is much admired by the nature lovers. The hilly tracks and the steep cliffs provide ample opportunities for mountaineers and adventure seekers.
Driving from Uttarkashi to Gangotri one reaches to Gangnani hot springs. Next day after visiting the Gangotri temple the trek starts towards Bhojbasha along the banks of the furious Bhagirathi that has awesome charm of its own. Spending a night in Bhojbasa camp in the nature's lap the morning trek starts towards Gaumukh, a place of natural grandeur and worship. After exploring Gaumukh the trek retreats to Bhojbasha camp and then back to Gangotri.
Gangotri Tapovan and Nandavan Trekking
From Uttarkashi a drive via Lanka Vairav Ghati, another famous pilgrimage leads to Gangotri. From Gangotri a 5 hour trek through picturesque valleys crowded by pilgrims, tourists, mules, traders leads to Bhojbasa via Chirbasa where Bhagirathi is in full vigor roaring downstream. A 9 kilometer trek leads to Gaumukh where the streams running down from the glacier presents a splendid view.
Next trek trails through the fascinating valleys brightly lit with flowers and the streams bifurcating through the green meadows leading to Tapovan. The panoramic view of Tapovan is stunning to the nature lovers and the peaks of Shivling, Meru and Bhagirathi massifs keeps the visitors spellbound. The trek retreats again to Gaumukh and from here a 5-6 hour trek leads to Nandanvan or the "Garden of Paradise" as it is called due to the heavenly beauty of the place. After camping overnight, the trek continues towards Bhojbasa via Chirbasa that ends on reaching Gangotri.
